UPO: The change is complete

Unnaipol Oruvan going great guns in Chennai city; collects over 20 lakhs at a single Cineplex within four days of its release. These are really handsome figures, though not record breaking by any standards. There have been many movies over the past that have shown far better collections in their initial days at theaters. For example, Unnaipol Oruvan might not able to match the figures netted by Dasavatharam. But what makes these 20 lakhs special are that they have been earned by Unnaipol Oruvan, which was hardly considered a candidate for great success. Of course, we all had great expectations from the movie because it came from the stables of Rajkamal and had Ulaga Nayagan Kamal Haasan in the lead with Mohanlal for company. We knew that it would be a class offering with a deep impact, because many of us were aware of and had seen ‘A Wednesday’. But, like many other class offerings of the past, there was the fear that box office success might just elude this thoroughly deserving product.

This fear is not without reason. There have been many Kamal masterpieces that have been quite universally acknowledged as high quality cinema but failed to leave any impression at the box office. Think about Hey Ram, Anbe Sivam or any others that belong to this category. The thing about such films was that they seemed to make it to theaters only because they featured Kamal Haasan. In his absence, such stories and films would never have been made, leave alone finding theaters to release. It was as if

good cinema had its place in the hearts of Tamil audiences but not on the big screen for any long period. The big screen always belonged to true commercial entertainers which had all elements to regale our minds in around 3 hours.

Now, Unnaipol Oruvan perhaps marks the crescendo of change that has begun in the reception of films that are of the ‘other’ kind, driven by elements that are non-commercial. There has been the odd film over the years that has kept breaking predictions to achieve box office success, like Cheran or Bala products. But, they were far and few in between and could be counted only as exceptions rather than as the rule. 2008 seems to have changed things from that position. Now, a film that chooses to stick to an honest and story driven form of narration is far more likely to find acceptance a few years ago. Counting Subramaniapuram, Pasanga, Naadodigal, Vennila Kabaddi Kuzhu, all in the span of 12 months, we have to accept that a wave of change in audience’s taste has occurred.

But, many might not be happy with the examples cited above. Though these movies did eliminate a lot of commercialism like punch dialogues, item numbers and the like, they still definitely contained a lot that was conventionally commercial. For instance, the comedy track, violence that could often border on the brutality and songs. In that respect, they could never be called ‘pure’ cinema. That is why Unnaipol Oruvan is important. It hopefully completes the transition of the average Tamil audience to the discerning who can pick out the genuinely good products from the rest and give it the recognition when it is still in theaters, not long after.

Unnaipol Oruvan has neither a comedy track, nor any song, nor violence, no heroine, no romance. Its dialogues might pack a punch but they are not what we would call punch dialogues. The maker has been confident enough to not include a song even in the opening or closing credits. Perhaps the only commercial present in the entire movie is the presence of a huge star, Kamal Haasan, but he is also a synonym for quality cinema in our times. In spite of being so starkly unconventional and non-commercial, if Unnaipol Oruvan is doing a smashing round at the box office, it does mean that audiences have begun to broaden their horizons beyond just time pass entertainment. For the success of Unnaipol Oruvan, congrats to the makers and to the ‘new look Tamil audience’.

Kamal the UNIVERSAL STAR

Ulagamengilum unnai vendrida yaaru? Unnai petradhil perumai kolludhu Thamizh (nadu)! was the song on my lips as I left Sathyam cinemas after watching Unnaipol Oruvan. Kamal has set innumerable trends in Tamil Cinema and Indian Cinema and here is another major one from him. Words are refusing to fade from my mouth in praising this man's love towards cinema; a man who has done a multi-starrer all by himself in Dasavatharam has taken the backseat in Unnaipol Oruvan. The reason for my awe is that it is just not Mohanlal who shines in this multi-starrer but there is Ganesh, there is Sethuraman who match the veterans scene to scene. Never seen such a scene in Tamil cinema !!!

I would not like to write a review of this movie but just elaborate on the movie's highs. Of course, absolutely there are no lows in the movie.

1. Kamal's passion for good cinema - goes to the extent of not getting a song played even as the end credits roll (which helps the mood of the film to stay on), albeit his daughter being the composer, requires great guts. I was expecting Vaaname ellai song at the end but it was not to be... What better example can one give for this man's love towards his work?

2. Mohanlal - He has shown what master class is through his performance and also what great actors are made of. Makes you yearn for more; the dignity of a police officer,
the body language which will make you salute him as if he is a real police COMMISSIONER !!! Simply superb! His interactions with each of the characters are noteworthy. Be it the clash with Lakshmi, or the command over his assistants or interacting with the reporter or speaking with the unknown man. A royal salute to Mohanlal!!! And not to forget the dialogue delivery and the punch dialogues which are few but pack a definite punch. One can go listing them

3. Ganesh Venkatram- Often there is battle regarding who is the next big star among the younger star and everyone wishes and tries to be one. But honestly- this one performance from this guy will speak volumes of his caliber and dedication. His eyes, body language alone are a proof of his acting. And this role can be easily compared to Suriya's Anbuchelvan of Kaakka Kaakka Watch out for the next big gun Ganesh Venkatram.

4. Sethuraman- I did not even notice his name till the credits but this boy’s style simply refuses to go out of the memory. The way he completes a task before even Mohanlal assigns and the spark in his eyes. To crown it all, the way he responds when Mohanlal queries about whether he has any fears in taking up this particular task because he could risk his life, is worth a royal salute.

More often than not, we read and hear about police not being sincere and being negligible towards public. But these three made me SALUTE the police force. I wish all the POLICEMEN in the country had the same dedication and pride regarding their job as this man. Not many movies show policemen in good light and this movie did and how!

5. Screenplay and Dialogues - The screenplay flies at the speed of a missile and when the movie does end- you keep wishing for more.., Dialogues as in all Kamal movies are spot on and make you laugh, cry, think, applaud and what not. The CM's voice specially is like an art by Ravi Varman. Kamal can alone think like this. In fact, every single dialogue that the Commissioner speaks ring applause. Witnessed such claps after a long time for each and every scene!

6. Music and direction - Excellent underplay, just what the movie needs and nothing extra.

7. Neeraj Pandey - If I forget to mention him, it would be injustice. The brain behind the original, his thinking and making needs nothing less than a National Award. Hope he gets it next year.

Kamal, you have done Indian cinema proud for fifty years now and this is another glory in your crown... Keep us entertaining...

So guys and gals, ladies and gentlemen, what are you waiting for? Let us celebrate 50 years of this legend along with Unnaipol Oruvan.

USP of Unnaipol Oruvan

When it comes to experimentation and creating new benchmarks in Tamil cinema, trust no one but Kamal! Unnaipol Oruvan is a classic example of such newness that we have longed for.

Here are some highlights that make UPO unique:

1. It's probably the first Tamil film to beat the two-hour duration. The movie runs for one hour fifty minutes.

2. There are no songs except for a background soundtrack.

3. There are no heroines.

4. Two great stars have shared the screen without ever meeting until the last two minutes.

5. Both the director and music director are debutants. Kamal's confidence is amazing. Two debutants were given the chance to work with two legends

6. Most characters do not have their attire changed as it all happens in a day. Only Mohanlal changes after realizing that he has lost his job.

7. The dialogues are unlike any other Tamil movie and absolutely real.

What Tamil cinema needs is to break from its duration factor. I had to sit through three hours and fifteen minutes to watch Kanthaswamy. UPO proves that you can tell a gripping story in less than two hours.

Hats off to Kamal for this daring attempt! I am sure the 'pundits' of Tamil cinema would have a thousand reasons why UPO is not up to their benchmarks. It takes people like Kamal to prove them wrong.

Way to go, Kamal! You have raised the bar on what we can expect from you in future. With you, there is still hope for excellent movies from Tamil cinema.

Radha Mohan to start 'Payanam'

Close on the heels of 'Mozhi' and 'Abhiyum Nanum', Radha Mohan's next directorial venture too will be produced by Prakash Raj. Titled Payanam, the movie would start its journey soon.
Says Prakash Raj, "I am currently producing three movies 'Mayilu', 'Inidhu Inidhu' and 'Payanam'. Mayilu is nearing completion while Inidhu Inidhu, a remake of Telugu hit Happy Days is fast shaping up. The shoot of Payanam, to be directed by Radha Mohan, will start soon."
Sources close to Prakash Raj's Duet Movies say that Payanam would be a different film quiet like 'Mozhi' and 'Abhiyum Nanum'. "At the same time, the movie would suit to the taste of the massed," they say.
